Men's Basketball Comeback Attempt Falls Short Against St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn

Box Score The men's basketball team suffered a tough loss to St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn, 70-67, on Tuesday night in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, the Bloodhounds fall to 8-14 on the season (6-7 in CUNYAC) while the Bears improve to 16-9 overall. 

St. Joseph's got off to an early lead in the first half but the Bloodhounds responded on a 9-2 run to give them a 14-12 lead with 12:53 left to go. The next four minutes saw three lead changes. The Bears ended the half on a 4-0 run and took a 38-34 lead into halftime. 

Early on in the second half, Brooklyn increased its lead to six. However minutes later, John Jay trimmed the deficit to two. Midway through the half, the Bloodhounds tied it up at 54 apiece. Once again, the home team responded on a 5-0 run with 7:28 remaining in the contest. 

The next five minutes featured both teams exchanging points. With the Bears leading by six with 3:40 left, John Jay scored five unanswered points to trim the lead to one. However, St. Joseph's played tough defense and made key free-throws to seal the non-conference victory by a score of 70-67. 

In the losing effort, junior Anthony Saldarriaga scored a career-high 19 points to go along with 8 rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Sophomore Kendal Jordan recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds (6 offensive). Junior Kris Owens netted 17 points and junior Korede Griffith registered seven points, seven rebounds, and a team-high three steals. 

St. Joseph's David Ortiz led the way with a game-high 22 points. Michael Megafu (17 points and 12 rebounds) and David Louison (12 points and 13 rebounds) picked up double-doubles. 

The Bloodhounds will return to conference action when they host Medgar Evers on Wednesday, February 12 at 6:00pm.
