Box Score 2 The baseball team split with Baruch College on Friday afternoon in Brooklyn, NY to earn themselves a spot in the CUNYAC Baseball tournament. The Bloodhounds won the first game, 12-11, but then fell short in game two, 9-6. John Jay finished the season with a 4-6 CUNYAC record and 7-23 overall record.
In game one, the Bearcats scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second on an RBI single. The Bloodhounds responded right away in the third inning and took a 3-1 lead. Sophomore
Joe Jacobsen led off with a single and advanced to second on a walk by sophomore
Esteban Soler. Senior
Ronald Barillas then singled on a bunt to load the bases and senior
Nico Rivera delivered a two-run single to the right side. With two outs and Rivera at third, senior
Corry Harper drove in Rivera on an RBI single.
In the top of the fourth, the Bloodhounds exploded for six runs on six hits in the inning. Barillas, Rivera, junior
Noel Sanchez, and freshman
R.J. Davila all recorded RBI singles. The biggest hit of the inning came off the bat of Harper, when he laced a two-run triple down the left field line.
Baruch stormed back in the following frame and eventually tied up the game, 9-9.
In the top half of the fifth, Rivera helped his own cause, when he came up with a crucial two-out RBI triple to give John Jay a 10-9 lead. The Bloodhounds tacked on two more in the sixth and seventh innings with RBI's by Sanchez and Rivera.
In the last inning, the Bearcats had first and second with one out. The Bearcats' second basemen delivered a two-run triple to cut the deficit to one. With a man on third and one out, pitching coach
Rich Anastasi called a pitch out on the first pitch. Fortunately for the Bloodhounds, Baruch was looking to execute the squeeze but junior catcher
Nestor Amarante tagged the Bearcat runner out at the plate and John Jay would lock up a playoff spot with a 12-11 win.
Rivera and Sanchez both finished with four hits on the day. Rivera added five RBI's and Harper had three. Barillas went 3-for-3 with an RBI, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. Davila recorded two hits and two RBI's. Soler registered two hits and two runs scored.
On the hill, Rivera threw a complete game for the victory and struck out five.
In game two, the Bloodhounds recorded the first run of the game. Amarante drilled a fastball to deep center to pick up his first homer of the season.
Baruch took a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning and John Jay trimmed the lead to two when Soler registered his first homerun of the season.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Bearcats added five insurance runs to lead, 9-1. The Bloodhounds would not go down without a fight. John Jay recorded five straight hits in the inning to trail 9-4. With the Bearcats leading 9-6 and the tying run at the plate, John Jay could not find a way to tie the game.
Sophomore
Matthew Quirindongo got the start and tossed four innings, allowing three hits, two earned runs, and struck out two.
On the day, the Bloodhounds recorded 28 hits and 18 runs.
The Bloodhounds will wait for final seeding to be announced early next week. This will be first-year head coach
Joe Mandile's first postseason appearance along with Anastasi and hitting coach/first base coach
Pat Mulkeen.
