Men's Soccer Loses Tough One to Old Westbury

The men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker to the College of Old Westbury, 4-3 in OT, on Wednesday afternoon at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY. The Bloodhounds drop to 0-3 on the season while the Panthers improve to 2-0.

For the first eight minutes of play, the chances were even with both teams registering shots on net. Nine minutes into the first half, senior Christian Munoz opened up the scoring by redirecting the ball into the net from a pass by senior Pablo Rojas. Nine minutes later, Munoz made a crisp pass to freshman Ricardo Llanos who blasted a shot by the Panthers' goalkeeper to give John Jay a 2-0 lead.

Old Westbury responded late in the half by scoring two goals within a minute and a half span. Heading into halftime, the score was tied up at two. The Bloodhounds outshot the Panthers 7-6. Senior Vitecha Kochaon recorded two saves.

For much of the early part of the second half, the Bloodhounds consistently put on the pressure and fired from all angles. Old Westbury caught a break in the 75th minute when a Panther tipped in a rebound goal to give the guests a 3-2 lead.

John Jay intensified the pressure and would not give up. With under one minute left, Rojas dribbled the ball down the right side and chipped it in the vicinity of the Panthers net. Senior Korede Griffith was able to beat the defender and tip the ball in to tie the game at three apiece.

In overtime, the Bloodhounds had many scoring opportunities but the Panthers' goalkeeper, Peter Sicardi, made some key saves. With less than one minute in the first overtime period, Panthers' Anthony Echevarria was awarded a free kick just outside the box and connected to give Old Westbury a 4-3 win.

Llanos finished with a game-high six shots and five on net. Munoz recorded a goal and Rojas dished out two assists. Griffith picked up a goal and two shots on net. Kochaon registered seven saves.

John Jay outshot the Panthers 25-15.

The Bloodhounds will travel to Western Connecticut State on Sunday, September 7, for a match starting at 7:00pm.
