The women's basketball team picked up their second win of the season in a 60-40 win over Medgar Evers College on Wednesday evening in Brooklyn, NY. The Bloodhounds improve to 2-10 overall and 2-5 in the conference. The Cougars drop to 1-14 on the season and 0-7 in CUNYAC.
With the score tied at three apiece with 16:00 left in the first half, John Jay went on a 8-0 run, capped off by a jumper by sophomore
Josephine Diaz. The Bloodhounds increased the lead when freshman
Victoria Royal converted on a three-point play. With John Jay leading 26-15 with six minutes remaining in the half, the Bloodhounds closed out the half on a 5-0 run to lead 31-15.
The Bloodhounds quickly increased the lead to 20 two minutes into the second half. With John Jay leading 38-20 with 15:21 left in the game, the Cougars went on a 8-0 run to cut their deficit to 10. Royal quickly responded with a lay-up.
With 8:05 remaining in the contest, the Bloodhounds went on a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach. John Jay would go on to win by a score of 60-40.
Royal led the Bloodhounds with her second double-double of the season with 13 points, 15 rebounds, and three steals. Diaz had 15 points, five assists, and a game-high eight steals. Sophomore
Brianna Cunningham recorded 15 points, nine rebounds, and a game-high three blocks off the bench. Junior
Amber Villegas dished out five assists and registered six points and 10 rebounds. Junior
Terri Chu swiped five steals.
John Jay went 23-for-69 (33.3%) from the field while the Cougars were 16-for-57 (28.1%).
The Bloodhounds will face the York Cardinals on Friday, January 16, at 6 p.m. in Jamaica.
