The women's basketball team defeated York College, 74-71, on Friday evening in Jamaica, NY. The Bloodhounds are now on a two-game win streak and improve to 3-10 on the season and 3-5 in the conference. The Cardinals fall to 4-11 overall and 2-5 in CUNYAC.
The Bloodhounds stormed out to an early 8-3 lead as junior

Brianna Cunningham had four points each. With 13:06 left in the first half, York tied the game at 12 apiece. John Jay regained the lead but once again, the Cardinals tied it up. The Cardinals took their second lead of the game one-minute later on a three-pointer.
With the Bloodhounds trailing 20-18 halfway through the half, sophomore
Josephine Diaz drained a three to give John Jay a one-point lead. Cunningham and Villegas then hit back-to-back shots to increase the lead to 25-20.
With just over three minutes left in the first half, John Jay opened up the game when the Bloodhounds went on a 8-2 lead. Heading into halftime, John Jay led 42-32.
The Cardinals started the second half on a 5-0 run to cut their deficit to five. Three minutes into the half, freshman
Victoria Royal made a lay-up to increase John Jay's lead to seven. York responded right away with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 48 apiece.
The next six minutes consisted of both teams exchanging baskets and five lead changes. With the score tied at 58 all and 8:19 on the clock, Cunningham connected on a lay-up and junior
Terri Chu hit a clutch three to put the Bloodhounds back on top by five.
York would not go down without a fight. With 128 seconds left to go and John Jay leading by six, the Cardinals went on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 71. Diaz sealed the victory for the Bloodhounds, hitting the last three free-throws of the game.
Diaz and Cunningham finished with 21 points each and combined for six rebounds and five assists. Villegas fell three assists shy of a triple-double with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and a game-high seven assists. It was her first double-double of the season. Royal registered 10 points, a game-high 21 rebounds, one block, and one steal. Chu added eight points and five assists.
John Jay shot an impressive 50% (29-for-58) from the floor and 38.5% (5-for-13) from behind the arc.
The Bloodhounds will head into non-conference action on Monday, January 19, when they travel to the College of Saint Elizabeth at 7 p.m.
