The women's basketball team fell to Hunter College, 58-50, on Friday evening on Hunter's campus. The Bloodhounds drop to 3-15 overall and 3-9 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Hawks improve to 8-13 on the season and 5-7 in the conference.
The Hawks jumped out to an early 18-2 lead with 12:25 remaining in the first half. John Jay then went on a 5-0 run to the cut the deficit to 11. Down by 14 halfway through the half, sophomore
Brianna Cunningham hit two jumpers and sophomore
Josephine Diaz nailed a three to trim the lead to 21-14.
Hunter responded right away on a 9-0 run to increase their lead to 16. The host's largest lead of the half came at 3:10 on the clock when the Hawks led by 17. The Bloodhounds ended the half recording the last five points to trail, 36-24.
John Jay shot 28.1% (9-for-32) from the field in the half. Cunningham led the Bloodhounds in scoring with eight points.
In the first four minutes of the second half, John Jay was able to cut the lead to 38-32. Hunter increased the lead back up to eight but Cunningham hit two free-throws and Diaz drained a jumper to cut the deficit to four.
With the Hawks leading 45-40 with 10:47 left in the contest, Hunter broke open the game on a 7-0 run to lead by 12. Five minutes later, the Bloodhounds trailed 54-46. Junior
Terri Chu recorded the next four points to trim the lead back down to four. However, the Hawks registered the last four points of the game to go on to win, 58-50.
Diaz led the Bloodhounds with 16 points and five rebounds. She hit a game-high four three-pointers. Cunningham finished with 12 points, on 5-for-7 shooting, and eight rebounds. Freshman
Victoria Royal grabbed eight rebounds and Chu dished out a team-high five assists. Junior
Amber Villegas recorded six points and six rebounds. Senior
Aneska Tejada added seven points.
The Bloodhounds return to the Doghouse on Tuesday, February 3, when they host Baruch College at 5 p.m.
