Women's Basketball Fights Hard but Falls to Rutgers-Newark in Season Opener

The women's basketball team lost to Rutgers-Newark, 56-48, on Saturday afternoon in Newark, NJ. The Bloodhounds drop to 0-1 on the season. The Scarlet Raiders improve to 1-0 overall. 

Senior Terri Chu led John Jay scorers with 12 points, three rebounds, and two steals. Junior Josephine Diaz recorded 11 points, four rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Senior Amber Villegas registered 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Senior Brianna Cunningham finished with seven points, a team-high eight rebounds, and a team-high five assists. Junior Shaliyah Ruiz and sophomore Victoria Royal combined for five points, 10 rebounds, and four steals. 

Rutgers-Newark took an early 9-3 lead in the first quarter, but two three-pointers by Chu and one from Diaz gave the Bloodhounds a 12-9 lead heading into the second quarter. With 7:22 left in the quarter, the Scarlet Raiders regained the lead, 15-14. A lay-up by Villegas tied the game at 16 apiece. Rutgers-Newark ended the first half on a 17-7 run to lead 33-23. 

In the third stanza, Cunningham hit two lay-ups to cut the deficit to 37-31. John Jay ended the quarter on a 6-2 run to trail 44-37 heading into the final 10 minutes. In the fourth, Diaz's three-pointer cut the lead to five. With 3:34 remaining, the Scarlet Raiders hit back-to-back shots to win the non-conference tilt, 56-48. 

John Jay went 18-for-60 (30%) from the floor, 6-for-19 (31.6%) from behind the arc, and 6-for-10 (60%) from the free-throw line.

The Bloodhounds will look for their first win of the season when they face New Jersey City University (0-1) on Sunday, November 15, at 12:00 pm in Newark, NJ.
