The women's basketball team collected their first win of the season against New Jersey City University, 70-51, on Sunday afternoon in Newark, NJ. The Bloodhounds improve to 1-1 on the season. The Gothic Knights drop to 0-2 overall.Â
"It was a great win," head coach
MollyAnne Light said. "We shot the ball extremely well and executed on our defensive gains. Well-rounded team win as everyone contributed and played team basketball."
Brianna Cunningham led John Jay with her first double-double. The senior recorded 17 points, a game-high 11 rebounds, and a game-high four blocks. Junior
Josephine Diaz led all scorers with 21 points, shooting 6-for-10 from the field and 6-for-8 from behind the arc, to go along with four rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Junior
Shaliyah Ruiz picked up nine points, eight rebounds, a game-high five assists, and a game-high six steals. Senior
Terri Chu added 11 points and senior
Amber Villegas had four assists, four rebounds, and three steals.Â
With the Bloodhounds trailing 4-2 in the first quarter, Diaz hit back-to-back three's as John Jay went on a 10-0 run to lead 12-6. NJCU cut the deficit to four and at the end of the quarter, John Jay led 16-11.Â
The Gothic Knights picked up the first two points in the second but John Jay responded on a 9-0 run, capped off by back-to-back buckets for Cunningham. With the Bloodhounds leading 28-15 and 5:12 remaining, NJCU recorded the next 10 points to trail 28-25. The Bloodhounds ended the quarter with Diaz and Chu draining three-pointers as John Jay led 34-26.Â
The Bloodhounds opened the third with a jumper by Ruiz. The next few minutes consisted of both teams exchanging baskets. With 4:50 left and John Jay up by 10, Diaz hit a three and Ruiz made a layup to give the Bloodhounds a 48-33 advantage. Heading into the fourth, John Jay led 49-39.Â
The Gothic Knigths recorded the first four points of the final stanza. With 5:11 remaining, John Jay went on a 9-0 run to seal the victory. The Bloodhounds outscored NJCU in the quarter, 21-12.Â
John Jay finished 23-for-49 (46.9%) from the field, 10-for-16 (62.5%) from behind the arc, and 14-for-20 (70%) from the free-throw line.
