The women's basketball team lost to Lehman College, 82-64, on Tuesday evening at the Doghouse. With the loss, the Bloodhounds drop to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Lightning improve to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
Senior
Brianna Cunningham recorded her second double-double of the season with a team-high 17 points, a game-high 20 rebounds (eight offensive), two blocks, and one assist. Freshman
Karen Rosario picked up 12 points, shooting 6-for-7 from the field, and two rebounds off the bench. Senior
Terri Chu and junior
Josephine Diaz combined for 18 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Junior
Cassandra Chery registered nine points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Junior
Claire Prince dished out a team-high four assists and junior
Shaliyah Ruiz added six points and four rebounds.
Lehman jumped out to an early 7-2 lead but back-to-back jumpers by Cunningham cut the deficit to one. The Bloodhounds took their first lead of the quarter when Chu drained a three-pointer to give John Jay a 12-9 lead. With 1:49 left, the Lightning tied the game at 14 apiece. With less than one minute to go, Cherry hit a three-pointer but Lehman responded to hit a three-pointer of their own to tie the game, 18-18 heading into the second quarter.
A jumper by Ruiz in the second stanza put John Jay up 20-18. The Lightning then went on a 6-0 run to take a 24-20 lead. Down by six with 3:13 left in the half, Diaz nailed a shot from behind the arc to cut Lehman's lead to 30-27. The Bloodhounds went into halftime trailing 35-31.
Two-and-a-half minutes into the third quarter, Chu hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 39 apiece. The Bloodhounds took their first lead since the first quarter when Cunningham made a free-throw. With 2:58 remaining, Rosario made a layup to tie the score at 49-49. The Lightning ended the half on a 15-4 run to take a 64-53 advantage heading into the final quarter.
Chery drained a jumper to start the quarter and cut the deficit to nine. Four minutes later, Lehman extended its lead to 16 points. The Bloodhounds would go on to fall in their first conference match by a score of 82-64.
John Jay went 28-for-72 (38.9%) from the field, 6-for-13 (46.2%) from behind the arc, and 2-for-7 (28.6%) from the free-throw line.
