The women's volleyball team lost to Baruch College, 3-0 (25-20, 25-9, 25-14), in the CUNYAC semifinals on Friday evening at Hunter College. The Bloodhounds end the season with an overall record of 11-14. The Bearcats improve to 18-18 on the season.
Sophomore
Rachel Eng led the Bloodhounds with a team-high six kills, two aces, and 10 digs. Junior
Katrina Zapanta dished out a team-high 12 digs to go along with four kills, one service aces, and six digs. Senior
Latanya Buckham registered four kills, three assists, and six digs. Senior
Perla Pozo added 10 digs and freshman
Nyla Lloyd-Clarke had two kills and one block.
Early on in the first set, both teams exchanged points as the set was tied at six apiece. Baruch then went on a 4-0 run only to see the Bloodhounds respond with a 7-1 run of their own to lead 13-11. The Bearcats eventually tied it at 14-14 but once again John Jay regained the lead after taking the next three points. Baruch took the first set after ending on a 11-3 run.Â
In the second set, the Bearcats jumped out to an early 4-1 lead. John Jay closed the gap to 5-3 but Baruch went on a 13-2 run to lead 18-5. The Bearcats closed out the set registering the last five points.Â
In the third and final set, Baruch recorded the first five points to lead 5-0. The Bloodhounds cut the deficit to three but once again Baruch responded on a 7-2 run. John Jay made a late comeback but eventually fell, 25-14.Â
The Bearcats advanced to the championship match but fell to the Hawks of Hunter, 3-0.Â
This match turned out to be the final one of
Latanya Buckham and
Perla Pozo's collegiate career. The Athletics Department wishes them the best of luck in the future!Â
