Men's Basketball Falls to #24 Brooklyn Bulldogs

The men's basketball team lost to #24 Brooklyn College, 91-64, on Friday night at the West Quad Center in Brooklyn, NY. The Bloodhounds drop to 0-7 on the year and 0-2 in CUNYAC. The Bulldogs improve to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference. 

Freshman Essien Epps led John Jay with 17 points, six rebounds, a team-high three assists, and a game-high five steals. Freshman Jerome Petty recorded 11 points and three rebounds. Junior Jesse Higgins registered eight points, on 4-of-6 shooting, and two assists. Junior Kiernan Hayes picked up eight points, seven rebounds (six offensive), two assists, and one steal. Senior Calvin Ingram added seven points and five rebounds. Junior Geno Ware and freshman David Morris combined for eight points and six rebounds. 

Brooklyn took the first lead of the game but a three-pointer by Petty gave John Jay a one-point lead. With the Bloodhounds trailing by two, Hayes hit a jumper to tie the game at seven apiece with 16:47 left in the half. The Bulldogs responded on a 13-3 run to give them a 20-10 lead. 

With the Bloodhounds down by 11, Epps hit a jumper and freshman Luciano Cruz-Fernandez made a three-pointer to cut the deficit to six with 7:14 on the clock. Once again, the hosts responded by scoring eight straight points to lead 34-20. Heading into the half, John Jay trailed 45-26.

Ware opened up the second half with a three-pointer to cut the lead down to 16. The Bloodhounds started the half on a 14-7 run to give Brooklyn a 52-40 advantage. Three minutes later, the Bulldogs increased the lead back up to 20. Brooklyn would go on to win the conference game by a final score of 91-64. 

John Jay finished 21-for-59 (35.6%) from the field, 6-for-22 (27.3%) from the field, and 16-for-26 (61.5%) from the free-throw line. 

The Bloodhounds head to City College (CCNY) on Tuesday, December 8, for a conference game at 8:00 pm.
