Women's Basketball Drops Close Game to CCNY Beavers

The women's basketball team lost a tough one to City College (CCNY), 52-49, on Tuesday evening at the Nat Holman Gymnasium in New York, NY. The Bloodhounds fall to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Beavers improve to 4-2 on the season and 2-1 in CUNYAC. 

Junior Shaliyah Ruiz fell one rebound shy of her first double-double with a game-high 16 points (8-for-12 from the field), nine rebounds, a team-high two assists, and two steals. Junior Josephine Diaz recorded 11 points and senior Brianna Cunningham registered nine points, five rebounds, and a game-high two blocks. Sophomore Victoria Royal grabbed a team-high 16 rebounds. Junior Cassandra Chery had six points and nine rebounds.

CCNY took an early 4-0 lead but a jumper by Royal cut the deficit to two. The Beavers scored the next four points to lead 8-2 with 4:00 left in the first. John Jay ended the half on a 7-2 run to trail 10-9. In the second quarter, Chery made a jumper to give the Bloodhounds their first lead of the contest. CCNY responded on a 6-0 run to lead 16-11 with 5:20 remaining in the half. A three-pointer by Diaz with seven seconds left cut the deficit to three heading into the third. 

Ruiz started the quarter with a layup but CCNY registered five straight points to go up 30-24. The Bloodhounds went on an 8-1 run to take its first lead of the second half, 32-31 with 5:08 on the clock. The hosts ended the quarter on a 11-0 run to lead 42-32. 

In the fourth, John Jay cut the lead down to three with 4:18 remaining in the game. One minute later and trailing 47-42, Diaz nailed a three-pointer and Cunningham made a free-throw to cut the deficit to one. With 0:26 on the clock, CCNY increased the lead back up to four. The Bloodhounds had a last second chance to tie the game but could not convert.

John Jay finished 22-for-64 (34.4%) from the field, 2-for-18 (11.1%) from behind the arc, and 3-for-10 (30%) from the free-throw line.
