The women's basketball team fell to the College of Staten Island, 78-43, during Homecoming on Thursday evening at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds drop to 2-6 on the season and 0-4 in the CUNYAC Athletic Conference. The Dolphins improve to 5-3 and remain undefeated in the conference at 3-0.Â
Junior
Shaliyah Ruiz led the Bloodhounds with seven points, 11 rebounds, a team-high six assists, and one block. Junior
Josephine Diaz recorded a team-high 12 points, on 4-of-8 shooting from behind the arc. Junior
Cassandra Chery finished with seven points and swiped a team-high two steals. Senior
Brianna Cunningham added six points and eight rebounds. Sophomore
Victoria Royal grabbed 11 rebounds and senior
Terri Chu had six points and two assists.Â
Cunningham opened the game by making a layup but CSI quickly went on an 8-0 run to lead by six with 6:32 left in the first quarter. Their largest lead came at 4:11 when they were up 13-4. At the end of the quarter, John Jay trailed 15-10.Â
The Dolphins scored the first six points of the second until Cunningham made a layup. With 2:05 remaining in the half, CSI increased its lead to 33-18. The Bloodhounds went into halftime trailing 36-21.Â
Two minutes into the third, the visitors had a 47-21 advantage. John Jay was able to cut the deficit after Diaz nailed a three-pointer and Royal and Chery hit back-to-back jumpers. Heading into the final quarter, CSI led 57-35.Â
The Bloodhounds did not record a basket in the first five minutes of the last quarter as Staten Island went on a 12-0 run. Chu then registered two straight three-pointers to cut the lead to 30. CSI would go on to win by a final score, 78-43.Â
John Jay finished 15-for-59 (25.4%) from the field, 6-for-25 (24%) from behind the arc, and 7-for-13 (53.8%) from the charity stripe.Â
The Bloodhounds travel to Camden, NJ on Sunday, December 13, to take on Rutgers-Camden at 3:00 pm.Â
