The women's basketball team defeated York College, 50-48, on Tuesday evening at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds improve to 6-16 on the season and 5-10 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Cardinals drop to 7-15 overall and 4-10 in CUNYAC.
Sophomore
Brianna Cunningham and freshman
Victoria Royal led John Jay with a double-double each. Cunningham finished with a game-high 16 points, 17 rebounds, one block, and one steal. Royal recorded a 12 points, a game-high 25 rebounds, and one steal. Junior
Terri Chu and sophomore
Josephine Diaz combined for 14 points, six rebounds, seven assists, and four steals. Junior
Amber Villegas registered six points, seven rebounds, a game-high two blocks, and dished out a team-high four assists.
The Bloodhounds got off to an early lead after scoring the first five points of the game. York responded by cutting the deficit to one but John Jay responded right away by increasing its lead back up to five.
With 9:46 left in the first half and the Bloodhounds leading, 12-8, York went on a 4-0 run to tie the game at 12 apiece. The last eight minutes of the half featured four ties and four lead changes. Heading into halftime, the score was 25-25.
The Bloodhounds opened up the second half by recording the first six points to take a 31-25 lead. With 13:41 left to go, the Cardinals trimmed the deficit to 2. John Jay's largest lead of the contest came with 7:14 on the clock and the Bloodhounds leading, 43-36.
A few minutes later, the visitor's went on a 6-0 run to tie the game, 45-45, with just under four minutes left. John Jay regained the lead but a three-pointer by York gave them a one-point advantage. With 44 seconds left, Cunningham tied the game on a free-throw.
In John Jay's final possession, Cunningham hit a jumper to give the Bloodhounds a two-point lead with 14 seconds left to go. The Cardinals called a timeout but the Bloodhounds played stingy defense, which allowed them to extend their winning streak to a season-best three games.
During halftime, the Athletics Department and women's basketball program honored two seniors,
Aneska Tejada and
Amanda Jimenez, who were playing in one of their final home games as a Bloodhound.
The Bloodhounds will close out their homestand on Thursday, February, 12, at 7 pm against the College of New Rochelle.
