The women's basketball team was eliminated from the postseason after falling to the College of Staten Island, 65-55, on Saturday afternoon on the campus of CSI. The Bloodhounds conclude the season with an 8-17 overall record and 6-10 conference record. The Dolphins improve to 16-10 overall.
Staten Island took an early 4-0 lead but a jumper by sophomore
Josephine Diaz cut the deficit to two. With the Bloodhounds trailing by four, sophomore
Brianna Cunningham made a lay-up to put the Dolphins up, 6-4.
CSI then went on a 7-0 run to increase their lead to nine with 15:39 remaining in the first half. Nine minutes later, the Dolphins led 30-17.
John Jay responded by registering the next nine points to trim the lead down to four. Staten Island quickly increased it back up to eight with 2:01 on the clock. The Bloodhounds then went on a 5-0 run and went into halftime trailing, 39-33. Junior
Terri Chu led all scorers with 12 points, courtesy of four three-pointers.
Five minutes into the second half, the host's increased their lead to 12. The Bloodhounds fought back to trim the deficit to nine with 13:42 left on the clock.
The Dolphins broke open the game on a 12-2 run to lead by 19. With 6:29 remaining and John Jay down by 20, the Bloodhounds recorded the next eight points to trail, 63-51. Unfortunately, CSI grabbed three offensive rebounds in the last two minutes and would go on to win by a score of 65-55.
Chu finished with a game-high 17 points and three rebounds.
Brianna Cunningham recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 15 points, 14 rebounds, and one block. Freshman
Victoria Royal grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds. Junior
Amber Villegas recorded eight points and 10 rebounds. Diaz added seven points, five rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
This game turned out to be the final one of
Aneska Tejada's and
Amanda Jimenez's collegiate career. The Athletics Department wishes them the best of luck in the future!
