The men's basketball team was eliminated from postseason play after falling to Brooklyn College, 83-68, on Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn, NY. The Bloodhounds end the season with a 5-21 overall record and 4-12 conference record. The Bulldogs advance to the semifinals and improve to 21-5.
Senior
Kris Owens opened up the game by hitting a deep three-pointer to give John Jay an early 3-0 lead. Senior
Korede Griffith then drained a shot from behind the arc to give the Bloodhounds an early 6-1 lead.
Brooklyn trimmed the deficit in half but Owens nailed his second three-pointer of the game to give John Jay a 9-3 lead with 17:33 left in the half. Three minutes later, the Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the contest.
Senior
Anthony Saldarriaga then gave John Jay a 14-13 lead after hitting a jumper. Brooklyn followed that up by recording the next nine points to put them ahead, 22-14.
With the Bloodhounds trailing 25-20, senior
Darell Robinson hit a three to cut the deficit to two with 6:03 remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs increased its lead back up to nine and went into halftime leading 38-31.
For the half, John Jay shot 12-for-31 (38.7%) from the field and 5-for-11 (45.5%) from behind the arc. Brooklyn went 16-for-27 (59.3%) from the floor. Owens led all scorers with 14 points.
Three minutes into the second half, Saldarriaga made a lay-up to cut Brooklyn's lead to 44-40. One minute later, the Bulldogs increased their lead to 49-42. Robinson and Owens hit back-to-back three's to put the Bloodhounds within one point.
Brooklyn's Jai Kellman responded by hitting two straight three-pointers to lead by seven. Griffith and sophomore
Ronald Merriwether hit consecutive jumpers to cut the deficit to 55-52 with 11:41 on the clock.
The Bulldogs then recorded the next seven points to lead by 10. Brooklyn opened up the game on a 10-0 run to give them a 17-point advantage with 4:18 remaining. The Bloodhounds were able to trim it down to 13 but ultimately fell by a final score of 83-68.
Owens finished with a team-high 21 points, team-high seven rebounds, a game-high three steals, and two assists. Saldarriaga recorded 15 points, a team-high six assists, and five rebounds. Robinson registered 14 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Griffith added seven points, five rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Junior
Kendal Jordan grabbed five rebounds and Merriwether had five points and four rebounds.
For his efforts, Brooklyn's Kellman was named the Player of the Game.
This game turned out to be the final one of
