The softball team swept Yeshiva University, 18-9 and 15-3, on Tuesday night on the campus of Fordham University. The Bloodhounds improve to 3-7 overall. The Maccabees drop to 0-4 on the season.
In game one, Yeshiva jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. John Jay responded to tie the game at three apiece at the end of one. In the top of the second, the Maccabees regained the lead, 6-3.
In the bottom half of the inning, sophomore
Jennifer Pace led off with a walk. Freshman
Lisa Pellegrino then smacked an inside-the-park
two-run homer to put the Bloodhounds down by one. Yeshiva added two runs in the top of the third to lead, 8-5.
In the bottom of the fourth, John Jay plated eight runs with senior
Jennifer Varela, senior
Jessica Zaccari, freshman
Nalena Cruzado, and freshman
Michelle Atiq all recording RBI's. The Bloodhounds scored five in the fifth inning to give them an 18-9 win.
Junior
Alinda Nicaj got the start and threw three innings. Freshman
Catherine Alvarado came in relief and pitched the final two innings to pick up her first collegiate win.
Offensively, Pellegrino finished 2-for-2 with two RBI's, four runs scored, and two walks. Minaya went 2-for-2 with one RBI and three runs scored. Cruzado registered three RBI's and three runs. Pace scored three times and Zaccari and Atiq had two RBI's each.
In game two, Yeshiva scored three runs in the top of the first. In the bottom half of the inning, Pace and Minaya walked to give John Jay first and second with one out. Varela then laced an inside-the-park three-run homerun to tie the game at 3-3. John Jay scored two more runs in the inning to lead 5-3 after one.
In the bottom of the second, Zaccari recorded an RBI single to increase the lead to three runs. With the bases loaded, Atiq cleared the bases with a three-run triple. Senior
Magnolia Perez followed with an RBI triple of her own to give the Bloodhounds a 10-5 lead.
That was all Pellegrino needed on the mound. She threw a complete game and struck out six enroute to her first collegiate win.
In the box, Varela and Atiq picked up three RBI's each. Six Bloodhounds recorded two or more runs in the contest.
The Bloodhounds will host the College of New Rochelle on Tuesday, March 24. The game will be played at Randall's Island Field 16 and will start at 4 p.m.
