Softball Takes Two from College of New Rochelle

The softball team swept the College of New Rochelle, 19-1 and 8-0, on Tuesday afternoon on the campus of Queens College in Flushing, NY. The Bloodhounds have now won four straight and are 5-7 on the season. The Blue Angels drop to 0-2 overall.

"Our squad executed extremely well today both on defense and offense," head coach Catherine Alves said. "Our rookies continue to shine because of the focus, intensity, and passion that our veterans establish as our culture. We will look to carry over this energy into every contest."

In game one, the Blue Angels opened up the first inning by scoring the first run of the game. John Jay responded by scoring five in the bottom half of the inning on four hits. In the bottom of the second, senior Jennifer Varela belted a two-run homer to left center, her second of the season, to increase the lead to six.

The Bloodhounds broke open the game in the bottom of the third, batting around the lineup to plate 12 runs. In the inning, Varela picked up five RBI's, freshman Nalena Cruzado recorded a two-run triple and an RBI single, and sophomore Jennifer Pace reached base on an RBI bunt single.

Freshman Catherine Alvarado threw a one-hitter in a five-inning shutout. She struck out five to pick up her second win of the season.

Offensively, Varela and Cruzado combined for six hits in seven at-bats, while registering 11 RBI's and four runs scored. Pace went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two stolen bases.

In game two, freshman Lisa Pellegrino pitched five innings, allowed one hit, and struck out seven enroute to her second win in her rookie season.

The Bloodhounds did all their damage in the first two innings when they scored five in the first and three in the second. Sophomore Danielle Minaya went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs. Senior Jennifer Varela finished 3-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Seniors Jessica Zaccari and Jocelyn Ocasio were 2-for-2 with an RBI each.

The Bloodhounds continue their homestand on Sunday, March 29, when they host SUNY Canton at Randall's Island for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
