The baseball team fell to SUNY Old Westbury, 11-1, on Thursday afternoon at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, NY. The Bloodhounds drop to 0-3 on the season. The Panthers are now on a four-game winning streak and improve to 4-2.
Old Westbury got on the scoreboard in the first inning when the home team scored two runs. They added to their lead in the second when they picked up four runs to lead 6-0.
In the top of the fifth, senior
Nestor Amarante led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded and no outs, freshman
Brian Garcia drove in Amarante on a fielder's choice. Unfortunately, John Jay was unable to capitalize and at the end of five, the Bloodhounds trailed 6-1.
The Panthers added five runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to go on to win by a final score of 11-1. Sophomore
Zach Hyde recorded John Jay's two lone hits. The Myrtle Beach, SC native also registered seven assists in the field. Junior
Esteban Soler swiped his second base of the season. Garcia picked up his first collegiate RBI.
Sophomore
Charles Mendes got the start for John Jay. After allowing runs in the first and second innings, the Maspeth native threw three scoreless innings before allowing an additional run in his final inning. Freshman
Christian Rodriguez pitched in relief for his first collegiate appearance on the mound.
The Bloodhounds face St. Joseph's College on Saturday, March 21, at Baseball Heaven at 6:00 p.m. for a single game.
