The softball team fell to SUNY Canton in a doubleheader, 13-8 and 11-0, on Sunday afternoon on the campus of the College of Staten Island. The Bloodhounds drop to 5-9 on the season. The Kangaroos improve to 6-6.
In game one, freshman
Lisa Pellegrino tripled in the bottom of the first and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore
Danielle Minaya. The Kangaroos responded by taking the lead in the second inning, 2-1.
In the top of the fourth with John Jay trailing 3-1, SUNY Canton plated four runs to lead 7-1. In the bottom half of the inning, senior
Jennifer Varela recorded a two-run single enroute to a five-run inning. At the end of four, John Jay trailed 7-6.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Bloodhounds regained the lead, 8-7, capped off by a sacrifice fly by Pellegrino. Unfortunately in the next frame, the Kangaroos took a 10-8 lead after scoring three runs in the inning.
The guests tacked on three insurance runs in the 7th to go on to take game one by a final score of 13-8.
Varela was 2-for-3 with two RBI's, one run scored, and one walk. Pellegrino finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Junior
Jamie Lam and sophomore
Lisbet Lorenzo picked up two hits each. In the circle, Pellegrino threw a complete game and struck out two.
In game two, SUNY Canton jumped out to an early lead in the second inning when they scored seven runs. They added two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to complete the sweep, 11-0.
The Bloodhounds were unable to muster a hit in the contest. John Jay reached base four times, all via walks.
The Bloodhounds will to look to regroup on Tuesday, March 30, when they host Lehman College at Randall's Island at 3 p.m.
