The baseball team was swept by City College (CCNY), 4-3 and 8-2, on Friday afternoon at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, NY. The Bloodhounds fall to 0-6 on the year and 0-2 in the CUNYAC. The Beavers improve to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
In game one, CCNY scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. John Jay responded in the top of the second when sophomore
Dylan Laudano recorded a two-out RBI single to cut the deficit to two.
Two innings later, senior
Nico Rivera and sophomore
Brian Cabral hit back-to-back singles and later advanced to second and third. Laudano drove in Rivera on a fielder's choice to cut the lead to 3-2. In the bottom of the fifth, CCNY tacked on an insurance run to give them a two-run advantage.
With the Bloodhounds down by two in the final frame, Laudano led off with a single and junior
Adonis Castillo came in to pinch-hit and delivered a single to give John Jay first and second with no out. The Bloodhounds tried executing a double steal but City College's catcher threw out a runner at third.
With one out and a runner at second, junior
Esteban Soler registered an RBI single to cut the score to 4-3. Soler then stole second to put the tying run in scoring position. An infield single by sophomore
Zach Hyde and a pinch-hit walk by
Brian Garcia loaded the bases for John Jay. Unfortunately, the Bloodhounds grounded into a double play to end the game and give CCNY the conference victory.
Laudano went 2-for-3 with two RBI's. Hyde and Cabral recorded two hits each. Rivera threw six innings, allowing five hits, four runs (two earned), and struck out five.
In game two, the Beavers scored two in the second inning and four in the third to take a 6-0 lead after three full innings.
In the top of the fourth, John Jay loaded the bases and Laudano walked to put the Bloodhounds on the scoreboard. Unfortunately that was all the Bloodhounds would score in the inning.
John Jay added another run in the fifth but would go on to lose their second conference game of the season.
Rivera went 2-for-3 with one run scored. Cabral finished 1-for-2 with a run, stolen base, and walk. Freshman
Christian Rodriguez pitched 2.2 innings in relief and gave up one run.
The Bloodhounds head to the College of Staten Island on Monday, March 30, for a single non-conference game.
