The baseball team fell to the College of Staten Island on Monday afternoon, 17-3 and 7-3, in a non-conference doubleheader on the campus of CSI. The Bloodhounds fall to 0-8 on the year. The Dolphins improve to 5-6.
Staten Island opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with two runs. They added to their lead in the second and fourth innings with six and nine runs, respectively.
In the top of the fifth, junior
Esteban Soler singled and stole second with two outs. Junior
Adonis Castillo drove in Soler with an RBI single to break the shutout. Senior
Nico Rivera followed that up with a two-run double off the fence.

Jason Gonzalez recorded two hits each. Soler and sophomore
Zach Hyde recorded the other two hits for John Jay.

Charles Mendes got the start for the Bloodhounds. Sophomore
Kelvin Frias and freshman
Joe Gregory pitched in relief. Gregory threw 2.2 scoreless innings and struck out four.
Just like in game one, the Dolphins took an early 3-0 lead after three full innings in game two. In the top of the fourth, freshman
Brian Garcia and Hyde led off the inning with back-to-back singles. The Bloodhounds would score a run on a fielding error in the inning.
In the fifth inning, freshman
Robert Moncino recorded his first collegiate hit. Later on in the inning, freshman
Jeremy Scheetz registered his first collegiate hit and RBI. Sophomore RJ Davila drove in the other run for John Jay on a fielder's choice.
Moncino finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. Hyde went 1-for-3 with a stolen base.

Michael Wang got the start and threw five innings. Senior
Nestor Amarante pitched the last inning.
