Softball Defeats St. Joseph's Brooklyn in Doubleheader

The softball team swept St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, 5-4 and 10-5, on Sunday afternoon at Randall's Island. The Bloodhounds improve to 10-12 on the season. The Bears drop to 8-10 overall.

In game one, John Jay opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when freshman Lisa Pellegrino drove in sophomore Daniella Minaya on a RBI groundout. The Bloodhounds added to their lead in the second inning when John Jay scored three runs in the frame. With two outs and sophomore Michelle Atiq at third, Minaya, sophomore Jennifer Pace, and Pellegrino recorded back-to-back-to-back RBI hits.

Senior Sara McKenna shut down the Bears offense until the top of the sixth. St. Joseph's scored four in the inning to tie the game at 4-4. In the bottom half of the inning, senior Jennifer Varela delivered a pivotal two-out RBI double to give the Bloodhounds a 5-4 lead.

McKenna then threw a scoreless seventh inning to give John Jay a 5-4 win. She pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits, four runs (two earned), and struck out five. Pace finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Pellegrino was 2-for-4 with two RBI's and Atiq was a perfect 2-for-2 with a run scored. Varela picked up a stolen base and a RBI.

Just like in game one, the Bloodhounds jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after two full innings. In the first, Pellegrino and McKenna registered RBI singles. In the next frame, Pellegrino picked up her second RBI single of the game.

The Bears scored two in the third and two in the fourth to tie the game at four apiece after three-and-a-half innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Varela smacked a two-run single, McKenna drew an RBI walk, and junior Jamie Lam drove in a run on an RBI single. After four full innings, John Jay led 8-4.

St. Joe's would not go down without a fight as the Bears cut the deficit to 8-5 in the top of the fifth. The Bloodhounds added two in the bottom of the sixth, courtesy of a RBI single by McKenna and a sacrifice fly by senior Magnolia Perez. Pellegrino pitched a scoreless seventh as the Bloodhounds would sweep the doubleheader by a score of 10-5.

Varela finished 2-for-3 with two RBI's and three runs scored. McKenna went 2-for-3 with three RBI's and Pellegrino was 2-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs. In the circle, Pellegrino tossed a complete game, allowing five hits, five runs (none earned), and struck out two.

The Bloodhounds return to CUNYAC action when they face Hunter College on Tuesday, April 14, at 3 p.m. at Randall's Island Field 12.
