The baseball team recorded their second win of the season on Thursday afternoon when they defeated Mount Saint Mary College, 9-5 in 10 innings, in Newburgh, NY. The Bloodhounds improve to 2-21 overall. The Knights drop to 11-14 on the season.
John Jay scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the second when junior
Esteban Soler recorded a two-out two-run single to score senior
Nestor Amarante and junior
Nick Gioia. The Bloodhounds tacked another run in the next inning to lead 3-0. Sophomore
Brian Cabral drove in sophomore
R.J. Davila on a RBI double.
In the bottom of the third, Mount Saint Mary scored two runs to cut the deficit to 3-2. In the bottom of the seventh, the hosts plated three runs to take a 5-3 lead.
The Bloodhounds responded in the top of the eighth when
Jason Gonzalez picked up a RBI single with two outs to cut the deficit to 5-4. In the next inning, sophomore
Zach Hyde reached base on a fielding error. He then stole second and advance to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Davila then came up with a clutch RBI single to tie the game up at five apiece and send it to extra innings.
In the next frame, John Jay loaded the bases and Soler delivered a two-run double to give the Bloodhounds a two-run lead. John Jay was not finished as Hyde registered an RBI hit and Davila scored on an error to put the Bloodhounds up by four heading into the bottom of the tenth.
Nico Rivera came in to pitch and the senior recorded the final three outs of the game.
Freshman
Yordan Ortiz got the start and allowed two runs in four innings. Senior
David Schildwachter, sophomore
Michael Wang, sophomore
Christian Rodriguez, and Rivera pitched in relief. Rodriguez picked up the win after throwing 2.2 scoreless innings.
Soler finished 2-for-5 with four RBI's. Davila, Rivera, Amarante, and Gioia picked up two hits each. Hyde recorded a hit, run scored, and stolen base.
The Bloodhounds host SUNY Old Westbury on Friday, April 24, at MCU Park in Brooklyn, NY. Before the game, the Athletic Department will honor seniors
