The baseball team lost to SUNY Old Westbury, 11-3, on Friday afternoon at MCU Park in Coney Island, NY. The Bloodhounds fall to 2-22 on the year. The Panthers improve to 19-8 overall.
Old Westbury got on the scoreboard in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, sophomore
Brian Cabral and senior
Nestor Amarante led off with back-to-back singles. With two outs, Cabral scored on a Panther fielding error to tie the score up at one apiece.
In the top of the fifth, the Panthers plated two runs to give them a 3-1 lead. In the bottom half of the inning,
Zach Hyde singled with one out and advanced to second on a walk by senior
Nico Rivera. Cabral then delivered an RBI single to the right side to cut the lead to 3-2.
Old Westbury broke open the game in the seventh inning when the visitor's scored six runs. In the eighth inning, senior
Nico Rivera smacked a double to left center field. Amarante drove in Rivera on a RBI ground out but the Bloodhounds fell, 11-3.
Senior
Michael Fabre got the start and pitched 6.1 innings and struck out two. Freshmen
Joe Gregory and
Jeremy Scheetz threw the final 2.2 innings in relief.
Rivera went 2-for-3 with a double and triple. Cabral and Amarante went 2-for-4 with an RBI each. Sophomores
Zach Hyde,
Jason Gonzalez, and
Joe Jacobsen picked up the other hits for John Jay.
Before the game, the Athletics Department honored seniors
Nico Rivera,
Erik Pratz,
Nestor Amarante, and
Michael Fabre, who were playing in one of their final home games of their collegiate career.
