The baseball team lost to New York University (NYU), 9-7, on Saturday afternoon at MCU Park in Coney Island, NY. The Bloodhounds drop to 2-23 on the season. The Violets improve to 18-19 on the year.
In the top of the second inning, sophomore
Jason Gonzalez doubled to left field to lead off the inning. With two outs, sophomore
Nick Gioia delivered an RBI single to center field to give the Bloodhounds an early 1-0 lead.
In the next inning, sophomore
Zach Hyde singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch with one out. Sophomore
R.J. Davila then singled down the left field line to score Hyde and put John Jay in front by two.
The score would remain the same until the bottom of the fourth when NYU tied the game at 2-2. The Bloodhounds responded in the next inning on a throwing error to give them a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Violets scored five runs to lead 7-3. In the next frame, freshman
Brian Garcia led off with a double and
Esteban Soler singled to give John Jay first and third with one out. Hyde then smoked a two-run double off the left field wall to cut the deficit to 7-5. With first and third, the Bloodhounds executed a fake bunt and run to score Hyde and trail by one run.
NYU scored one run in the seventh and eighth innings to lead, 9-6. In John Jay's last inning, the Bloodhounds scored a run but would go on to fall, 9-7.
Sophomore
Christian Rodriguez got the start and threw 7.1 innings while striking out four. Gioia pitched the final 0.2 innings in relief. Hyde went 2-for-4 with two RBI's, three runs scored, and one stolen base. Soler went 2-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases. Gonzalez picked up two hits and Davila had one hit, one RBI, and two stolen bases.
The Bloodhounds travel to Manhattanville College on Sunday, April 26, for a non-conference doubleheader.
