The baseball team suffered two tough defeats against Western Connecticut State on Thursday afternoon in Danbury, Connecticut. The Bloodhounds lost game one, 3-2 and then fell in game two, 6-5. John Jay falls to 3-28 on the year. The Colonials improve to 17-18 on the season.
In game one, the game was scoreless until the top of the second. Sophomore
Jason Gonzalez led off the inning with a single and stole second. With two outs, junior
Esteban Soler recorded a RBI double to give the Bloodhounds an early 1-0 lead. Sophomore
Zach Hyde then picked up a RBI single to increase the lead to two.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth when the host's scored a run to cut the deficit to 2-1. In the bottom of the seventh, Western Connecticut tied the game on a RBI double and won the game on a sacrifice fly.
Freshman
Joe Gregory got the nod and threw 6.2 innings, allowing five hits, three runs (two earned), and struck out five. Hyde finished 3-for-4 with a RBI and stolen base. Davila picked up two hits and Soler registered a hit, RBI, and run scored. Gonzalez had a stolen and scored a run.
In game two, the Colonials scored in the first inning but John Jay responded to tie the game in the top of the second on a RBI by freshman
Robert Moncino.
With the scored tied at one apiece, Western Connecticut took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. Just like earlier in the game, the Bloodhounds responded by scoring three runs in the top of the six to lead 4-2.
The Colonials bounced back to score three in the bottom half of the inning to lead 5-4 heading into John Jay's final frame. With runners on the corners with one out, freshman
Brian Garcia delivered a RBI sacrifice fly to tie the game at 5-5.
Western Connecticut scored the game-winning run in the bottom half of the inning to complete the sweep.
Gonzalez finished 3-for-4 with a double and run scored. Soler swiped two bases and Garcia had two runs and a RBI. Junior
Nick Gioia got the start and pitched six innings allowing five runs (two earned) and striking out six.
The Bloodhounds travel to Vassar College on Saturday, May 2, for a single game at 1 p.m.
