The #4 men's volleyball team fell to #5 Lehman College, 3-1 (26-24, 21-25, 25-22, 32-30) in a back-and-forth CUNYAC Quarterfinals match on Tuesday evening at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds end the season with a program-best 12-11 overall record and program-best 10-6 conference record. The Lightning improve to 16-13 on the season.
Early on in the first set, both teams exchanged points but Lehman took a 10-7 lead. John Jay tied it at 15 apiece and a few minutes later, the Bloodhounds led 23-20. Lehman rattled off four straight points to regain the lead, 24-23. The Bloodhounds ended up losing the opening set, 26-24.
In the second stanza, John Jay led 5-1 but six points later, the set was tied 6-6. The Bloodhounds then recorded eight straight points to lead 14-6. Lehman made a late comeback but John Jay was able to hold on to the lead and won the set, 25-21.
The third set opened up with Lehman registering the first four points. With John Jay trailing 6-4, the Bloodhounds recorded six straight points to lead 10-6. Later on, John Jay increased its lead to 15-8. Lehman then went on a 13-6 run to tie the game at 21 apiece. The Lightning ended the set picking up six of the final seven points to win, 25-22.
In the fourth and final set, Lehman led 5-0 early on. John Jay then went on a 6-2 run to trail 7-6. The Bloodhounds would tie the set at 13-13. The next 18 points went back-and-forth with the game tied at 22 apiece. John Jay was able to overcome five match points but ultimately fell in the set by a score of 32-30.
Junior
Jack Palleschi led John Jay with a double-double with a team-high 15 kills, 11 digs, three assists, and two solo blocks. Senior
Yevgeniy Remennik and
Juan DeJesus combined for 28 kills (14 each), 17 digs, and four assists. Junior
Nicholas Anderson also recorded a double-double with a team-high 36 assists, 11 digs, seven kills, and two blocking attempts. Freshman
Alexander Santana picked up five kills, three digs, two solo blocks, and three blocking attempts. Freshmen
Gary Wu and
Brandon Dolores registered eight and six digs, respectively.
The Bloodhounds finished with 56 kills, 44 assists, 58 digs, five solo blocks, and eight blocking attempts. The Lightning had 58 kills, 56 digs, 53 assists, three serving aces, one block, and six blocking attempts.
Lehman advances to the semifinals and will face Baruch College on Friday, April 9, at Hunter College.
