Softball Falls to Brooklyn College

The softball team was swept by Brooklyn College, 8-0 and 7-6, on Tuesday afternoon on the campus of Brooklyn College. The Bloodhounds drop to 6-12 on the season and 1-3 in conference play. The Bulldogs improve to 8-10 on the year and 6-2 in CUNYAC.

In game one, John Jay's offense went hitless in six innings. The Bloodhounds reached base four times. Freshman Catherine Alvarado got the start and threw five innings, allowing seven hits, eight runs (five earned), and struck out two.

In the second game, Brooklyn opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first to lead 1-0. John Jay responded right away in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Senior Jennifer Varela led off with a walk and was driven in by a RBI triple by senior Jessica Zaccari. Senior Magnolia Perez then singled to centerfield to score Zaccari.

Brooklyn then scored two in the bottom half to put the hosts up by one. In the third inning, freshman Lisa Pellegrino walked with one out. Varela then smoked a RBI triple to left field to tie the game at three apiece. In the next inning, Perez and senior Jocelyn Ocasio led off with back-to-back singles. Sophomore Jennifer Pace then singled to left center with two outs to score Perez. After three-and-a-half innings, John Jay led 4-3.

In the bottom of the fourth, Brooklyn scored four runs on two hits to regain the lead, 7-4. Once again, the Bloodhounds responded in the following inning. In the top of the fifth, sophomore Danielle Minaya led off with a double to left field and advanced to third on a single by Varela. With first and third and no outs, John Jay executed a double steal to score Minaya. Later on in the inning, Varela crossed home plate as a result of a fielding error to put the Bloodhounds down by one.

Unfortunately, John Jay could not find a way to tie the game in the sixth or seventh innings and would go on to fall, 7-6.

Pellegrino pitched six innings and allowed nine hits, seven runs (four earned), while striking out two. Varela went 2-for-3 with an RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Minaya was 2-for-4 with one run and one stolen base. Perez finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Ocasio had an RBI and a stolen base.

The Bloodhounds travel to Mount Saint Vincent College on Thursday, April 9, for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
