Carlson's First Career Hat-Trick Powers Men's Soccer to First Win of Season

The men's soccer team collected their first win of the season on Friday afternoon when the Bloodhounds defeated New Jersey City University (NJCU), 3-1. John Jay gets back to .500 at 1-1 while the Gothic Knights drop to 0-2.

The first half was relatively quiet for both teams as neither team found the back of the net. The Bloodhounds recorded five shots and three shots on goal. NJCU picked up 10 shots and one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.

Four minutes into the second half, senior Graysen Carlson stole the ball from a NJCU defender and blasted a shot off the left post and in to give the Bloodhounds a 1-0 lead. About 20 minutes later, Carlson added his second goal of the game after breaking through the defense and chipping it over the goalkeeper to increase the lead to two. Fortunately, Carlson was not finished. In the final seven minutes of the game, the Sacramento, CA native completed the hat-trick on a breakaway to record his first collegiate hat-trick of his career.

NJCU outshot John Jay 25-10 in the match. Coming in relief of sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Hoyte, senior Sehad Mujovic made four saves to register the win for the Bloodhounds. Senior Drew Guerra and freshman Tosin Abudiore added an assist each. Freshman Frank Loria recorded two shots on goal.

The win was only John Jay's second win against the Gothic Knights in 17 meetings.

The Bloodhounds will look to make it two-in-a-row on Saturday, September 5 when they host SUNYIT at Randall's Island Field 75 at 6:45 pm.
