The men's basketball team lost to Baruch College, 70-54, on Tuesday night at Baruch's ARC Arena. The Bloodhounds fall to 2-11 overall and 1-5 in the conference. The Bearcats improve to 7-5 and 3-2 in CUNYAC.
Kiernan Hayes fell one rebound shy of his second straight double-double as the junior recorded a team-high 17 points, shooting 7-for-11, a team-high nine rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Junior
Jesse Higgins finished with 16 points, going 4-for-6 from the field and 2-for-2 from behind the arc, two assists, and one steal. Freshmen
Jordan Aiken and
Essien Epps combined for 13 points, seven rebounds, and five steals. Senior
Calvin Ingram grabbed five rebounds and junior
Geno Ware dished out a game-high three assists.
The first eight minutes of the contest consisted of five lead changes. With the Bloodhounds leading 7-6 with 12:32 remaining, Baruch went on a 10-0 run to go ahead by nine. Three minutes later, John Jay chipped away at the lead to trail 18-15. Epps then nailed a three-pointer to tie the game with 6:04 on the clock. The hosts went into the half leading 29-26.
Hayes and Higgins opened the second half with back-to-back layups to give John Jay a one-point lead. Baruch responded on a 7-0 run lead to give them a 36-30 advantage. John Jay cut the deficit to 38-34 but the Bearcats went on a 16-0 run to break open the game. The Bloodhounds were outscored in the half, 41-28.
John Jay finished 17-for-50 (34%) from the floor, 5-for-17 (29.4%) from behind the arc, and 15-for-22 (68.2%) from the charity stripe.
The Bloodhounds host Manhattanville College on Friday, January 8, at 7:30 pm at the Doghouse.
