The women's basketball team started the new regime with a season-opening loss to Manhattanville College, 52-34, on Tuesday evening in Purchase, NY.
Senior
Cassandra Taylor led the Bloodhounds with a game-high 20 points, seven rebounds, and team-high two steals. The Philadelphia, PA native also went 11-for-12 from the free-throw line. Senior
Claire Prince recorded four points and five rebounds. Junior
Dana Nicholson finished with seven rebounds and a team-high two assists. In her first collegiate game, freshman
Uju Nwaigwe registered six rebounds.
With John Jay trailing 7-2 in the first quarter, the Bloodhounds went on a 9-0 run to give them an 11-7 lead. The Valiants cut the deficit to 11-10 to end the quarter. Senior
Shaliyah Ruiz opened the second with a jumper to increase the lead to three. One minute later, Manhattanville took a 14-13 advantage. Taylor responded to record five straight points but the Valiants bounced back on a 12-0 run to go up, 26-18. At the half, John Jay trailed 30-21.
Two-and-a-half minutes into the third, the home team increased their lead to 13. Taylor hit a layup but Manhattanville scored nine straight points to lead, 44-24. The Valiants led 47-28 after three quarters. Taylor scored the Bloodhounds' six points in the final stanza but John Jay fell by a final score of 52-34.
John Jay finished 9-for-49 (18.4%) from the field, 1-for-15 (6.7%) from behind the arc, and 15-for-23 (65.2) from the free throw line.
The Bloodhounds travel to Ramapo College on Friday, November 18, for the Ramapo College Tip Off Tournament. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
