The men's basketball team lost to the College of Staten Island in the final minute, 60-58, on Tuesday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds fall to 0-5 and 0-1 in CUNYAC. The Dolphins improve to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
Junior
MiKing Richardson finished with a season-high and game-high 24 points, shooting 7-for-13 from the floor and 9-for-10 from the free-throw line, six rebounds. Senior
Kiernan Hayes recorded his first double-double of the season with 10 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Sophomore
Essien Epps picked up 10 points, four rebounds, and a game-high four steals. Freshman
Wyatt Harkins added nine points and senior
Geno Ware swiped three steals.
CSI jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and increased their lead to 19-6 with 12:24 left in the first half. The Bloodhounds responded on a 10-1 run to cut the deficit to four. The Dolphins quickly increased their advantage back up to 11 with 7:10 remaining. John Jay ended the half scoring the final four points to head into halftime trailing 34-27.
Two-and-a-half minutes into the second period, the hosts increased the lead to 43-29. John Jay scored seven straight points to trail by seven. With 11:06 left to go and the Dolphins up 54-40, the Bloodhounds went on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to five. CSI responded to go back up by nine but once again John Jay bounced back to score nine straight points to tie up the game, 58-58.
Staten Island regained the lead, 60-58, with 1:02 remaining. Harkins attempted a three-pointer for the win with one second on the clock but was unsuccessful.
John Jay went 21-for-62 (33.9%) from the field, 2-for-15 (13.3%) from behind the arc, and 14-for-19 (73.7%) from the free throw line.
