The #3 women's volleyball team lost to #2 Baruch College, 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-16), on Friday evening at Baruch's ARC Arena. The Bloodhounds end the season with an overall record of 12-12. The Bearcats improve to 13-23.
Early on in the first set, both teams exchanged points as the Bloodhounds led 4-3. Baruch then went on a 5-0 run to take a four-point advantage. John Jay stormed back on an 8-2 run to regain the lead, 13-12. Both teams then swapped three straight points each. With the score knotted at 17, the Bloodhounds ended the set on an 8-3 run to take their first set from Baruch in program history.
The beginning of the second set was much like the first as the score was tied 6-6. John Jay then rallied four straight points only to see the Bearcats record five straight points to go up 11-10. With the hosts leading 24-18, John Jay tallied five straight points and Baruch called a timeout. The Bearcats were finally able to get the final point to tie the match at 1-1.
The first seven points of the third consisted of three lead changes. With the Bloodhounds leading by one, Baruch went on a 6-1 run to take a 10-6 advantage. Later on, the Bearcats increased their lead to five but John Jay responded to cut the deficit to 19-16. The home team ended the set on a 6-1 run to lead two games to one.
In the final set, Baruch took six of the first nine points. The Bloodhounds closed the gap to 6-5 but the Bearcats went on a 6-1 run to lead 15-10. Baruch would end up taking the fourth set by a score of 25-16.
Junior
Rachel Eng recorded her seventh double-double of the season with a game-high 14 kills, 15 digs, and three service aces. Senior
Katrina Zapanta picked up her sixth double-double with a team-high 27 assists, 12 digs, three kills, and one ace. Junior
Savannah Davis picked up 15 digs and freshman Jhoanna Castro finished with six kills and four digs. Senior
Jeanette Luna had seven kills and eight digs. Sophomore
Nyla Lloyd-Clarke and freshman
Mirialis Almanzar totaled eight kills and freshman Kimberly Rodriquez had three aces.
John Jay totaled 39 kills, 33 assists, 10 service aces, and 60 digs.
