Women's Basketball Closes Out Regular Season With Loss to CCNY

The women's basketball team closed out the 2015-16 regular season with a 62-42 loss to City College (CCNY) on Friday evening at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds finish the regular season with a 6-19 overall record and 3-13 conference record. The Beavers improve to 15-8 overall and 10-4 in CUNYAC. 

Junior Shaliyah Ruiz recorded a team-high 14 points, three rebounds, and two assists. Senior Terri Chu picked up 13 points and sophomore Victoria Royal grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds and registered a game-high two blocks. Sophomore Karen Rosario added 10 boards. 

CCNY stormed out to an early 7-2 lead but the Bloodhounds tied it at seven apiece. The Beavers increased its lead to four but John Jay closed the gap to trail 15-12 heading into the second quarter. The hosts opened the second on a 6-1 to lead by eight. The Bloodhounds cut the deficit down to three with 1:52 on the clock. City College took a 27-21 advantage heading into halftime. 

Three minutes into the third, CCNY led by 13. Two minutes later, the Bloodhounds trailed 40-23. The Beavers ended the period on an 11-0 run to go up 53-27. The final quarter went back-and-forth but the Bloodhounds would go on to fall by a final score of 62-42. 

John Jay went 15-for-57 (26.3%) from the field, 4-for-28 (22.2%) from behind the arc, and 8-for-8 (44.4%) from the free-throw line. 

Before the game, the Athletics Department honored seniors Terri Chu and Amber Villegas, who were playing in their final regular season home game of their collegiate career. 

The Bloodhounds will enter the CUNYAC tournament as the seventh or eighth seed. John Jay will either travel to Hunter College or Baruch College. Stay tuned for more information!
