The women's basketball team fell to Medgar Evers College, 62-54, on Friday evening in Brooklyn, NY. The Bloodhounds drop to 5-18 overall and 2-12 in the conference. The Cougars improve to 2-20 on the season and 2-11 in CUNYAC.
Sophomore
Victoria Royal recorded her second straight double-double with a team-high 16 points and a game-high 19 rebounds. Junior
Shaliyah Ruiz registered nine points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Freshman
Karen Rosario finished with eight points, five rebounds, and one block. Freshman
Dana Nicholson came off the bench and picked up nine points and junior
Josephine Diaz grabbed five rebounds.
The Cougars started the game scoring eight of the first 10 points. The Bloodhounds fought back to cut the deficit to 10-8 with 1:33 left in the first quarter. At the end of one, Medgar Evers had a 12-10 advantage. In the second, the game went back-and-forth and with 2:53 remaining, the Bloodhounds tied it at 20 apiece. John Jay took a 29-27 lead heading into halftime.
The Bloodhounds opened the second half on a 7-0 run to increase its lead to nine. The Cougars responded on a 9-0 run of their own to tie the game, 36-36. The hosts ended the quarter on a 5-1 run to lead 41-40. Royal made a layup to give John Jay a one-point lead in the fourth, but Medgar Evers followed scoring seven straight points to go up 48-42 with 6:26 on the clock. Two minutes later, the Bloodhounds cut the deficit to three. With 0:31 left, the Cougars took a seven-point lead and would go on to sweep the Bloodhounds in the season series.
John Jay went 20-for-57 (35.1%) from the field, 5-for-17 (29.4%) from behind the arc, and 9-for-17 (52.9%) from the free-throw line.
The Bloodhounds travel to York College on Tuesday, February 9, for a conference game at 6:00 pm.
