The women's basketball team defeated York College, 64-54, on Tuesday evening in Jamaica, NY. The Bloodhounds improve to 6-18 overall and 3-12 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Cardinals drop to 4-18 and 2-12 in the conference.
Junior
Josephine Diaz led John Jay with a game-high 18 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Senior
Terri Chu registered 15 points, two rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Junior
Shaliyah Ruiz recorded 10 points, nine rebounds, a game-high six assists, and a team-high three steals. Senior
Amber Villegas came off the bench to add 10 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Sophomore
Victoria Royal had eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
With the Bloodhounds trailing 3-2, John Jay went on a 6-0 run to lead 8-3 in the first. The Bloodhounds ended the quarter recording the last six points to go up 19-12. In the second, York cut the deficit to 19-15 with 8:38 left. John Jay responded on a 7-0 run to lead 26-15. The Cardinals ended the half scoring the final 10 points to go into the halftime trailing 26-25.
Villegas opened up the second half with two layups to increase John Jay's lead back up to five. With 4:56 on the clock, the Bloodhounds held a 40-32 advantage. York followed on a 12-5 run to go into the final period down by one. The Bloodhounds began the fourth scoring eight straight points to go up by nine. That was all John Jay needed as they cruised to a 64-54 victory.
John Jay went 25-for-71 (35.2%) from the floor, 8-for-23 (34.8%) from behind the arc, and 6-for-8 (75%) from the charity stripe.
If the Bloodhounds win their final regular season home game, they will secure the seventh or eighth seed in the CUNYAC tournament. John Jay hosts City College (CCNY) on Friday, February 12, at 6:00 pm at the Doghouse. Before the game, the Athletics Department will honor its two seniors,
