The baseball team split its doubleheader with Lancaster Bible College on Saturday afternoon in Lancaster, PA. The Bloodhounds lost game one, 10-3, but rebounded to take the second, 12-8. John Jay is now 3-13 on the season. The Chargers are now 8-7.
In game one, the Bloodhounds scored in the first inning on a two-out RBI single by junior
Dylan Laudano. Lancaster responded in the bottom of the second by plating four runs to lead 4-1. In the following inning, sophomore
Brian Garcia tripled and was driven in by an RBI single by junior
Charlee Rodriguez.
John Jay cut the deficit to one run in the fourth inning when freshman
Brandon Thomas led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third, and scored on a passed ball. In the bottom half, the Chargers increased its lead back up to five. At the end of four, John Jay trailed 8-3. The hosts added two runs in the sixth to take the first game by a score of 10-3.
Junior
R.J. Davila went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Rodriguez picked up two hits and an RBI. Sophomore
Joe Gregory got the start on the mound and pitched 3.2 innings. Freshmen Jonathan Warasilia and
C.J. Meyer pitched scoreless innings in relief.
In game two, the Chargers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after the first. John Jay bounced back to score three in the top of the third. With two outs, Laudano knocked in Garcia with an RBI double to left center to give the Bloodhounds a 3-1 lead. Lancaster scored one in the bottom half of the inning to trail 3-2.
In the fifth, sophomore
Zach Hyde led off with a double and stole third. Rodriguez recorded a sacrifice fly to center field to score Hyde and give the Bloodhounds a two-run lead. Once again, the Chargers got one back in the bottom half of the inning.
John Jay scored one in the sixth but Lancaster answered with three runs and heading into the final inning, the Chargers led 7-5. In the top of the seventh, the Bloodhounds scored seven runs to lead 12-7. Junior
Jason Gonzalez, senior
Esteban Soler, and Davila all recorded RBI walks. Hyde picked up a two-run single and Rodriguez registered an RBI single.
Lancaster scored one in the bottom of the seventh but the Bloodhounds would even out the series by a final score of 12-8.
Hyde finished 3-for-5 with two RBI's, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. Soler was 1-for-3 with two runs scored, one RBI, and one stolen base. Rodriguez had two RBI's. Laudano went 1-for-1 with one RBI, one run, and four walks.
Sophomore
Christian Rodriguez started and threw five innings. Junior
Charles Mendes pitched the final two innings and recorded the win.
The Bloodhounds travel to Palisades Park, NJ for a doubleheader against Yeshiva University on Sunday, March 27, starting at 10:00 am.
