The baseball team fell to St. Joseph's College Long Island, 7-5, on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon in Patchogue, NY. The Bloodhounds drop to 1-8 on the season. The Eagles improve to 3-2.
John Jay opened the scoring in the top of the third when freshman
Brandon Thomas led off with a single and stole second. With one out and Thomas at third, senior
Esteban Soler drove him in with an RBI ground out to give the Bloodhounds a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, the Eagles scored two runs to take their first lead of the contest.
However, John Jay responded right away. In the top of the fourth, junior
Dylan Laudano crushed a homer to left field, for his first of the season, to tie up the ball game, 2-2. In the bottom of the fifth, St. Joe's scored two runs to retake the lead and added three in the sixth to lead 7-2.
The Bloodhounds would not go down without a fight. In the seventh, junior
Brian Cabral led off with a double and advanced to third on a ground out. Junior
Jason Gonzalez delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Cabral.
In John Jay's next frame, sophomore
Zach Hyde led off with a triple to center field. Senior
Noel Sanchez pinch-hit and came through with an RBI single to right field. Later on in the inning, junior
Charlee Rodriguez singled and stole second. With two outs, Laudano recorded his second RBI of the game with a single to left field. John Jay did not score in the final inning to fall by a final score of 7-5.
Hyde finished with two hits and a stolen base.
Freshman
Jonathan Warasila got the nod and threw 5.2 innings, allowing seven runs, while striking out one. Freshman
Christian Pacheco came in in relief and threw 2.1 shutout innings.
The Bloodhounds are back at it on Sunday, March 13, when they travel to Manhattanville College for a doubleheader starting at 12:00 pm.
