The baseball team split with Baruch College on Tuesday afternoon on the campus of the College of Staten Island. The Bearcats took the first game, 5-4, before the Bloodhounds won game two, 9-0. John Jay is now 7-15 on the season and 1-1 in the conference. Baruch is 7-13 overall and 1-1 in CUNYAC.
In game one, Baruch jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after two full innings. In the top of the fourth with second and third, junior
Dylan Laudano came through with a two-run triple to right center field to cut the deficit to 5-2. Laudano later scored on a wild pitch to trail by two. Later on in the inning, freshman
Jonathan Warasila recorded an RBI ground out to put the Bloodhounds down by one.
John Jay loaded the bases in the sixth but was not able to capitalize. In the last inning, the Bloodhounds put runners on base but fell by a final score of 5-4.
Sophomore
Chris Rodriguez got the start and threw a complete game (six innings), allowing seven hits, five runs (three earned), three walks, and struck out a season-high eight batters. Laudano and sophomore
Zach Hyde recorded two hits and one run scored each. Hyde also had a stolen base.
In game two,
Matthew Quirindongo threw a gem to even the season series. The senior threw a complete game shutout, allowing five hits, one walk, and struck out six. The Bloodhounds gave Quirindongo run support even before stepping on the mound by scoring four runs in the top of the first. John Jay added insurance runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
In the first, Hyde picked up an RBI double, sophomore
Brian Garcia drove in a run on an RBI ground out, and Warasila and freshman
Brandon Thomas recorded RBI singles. In the fifth, Hyde stole home for John Jay's fifth run. In the next two frames, junior
R.J. Davila, Thomas, and senior
Esteban Soler registered RBI's.
Charlee Rodriguez led the Bloodhounds going 3-for-4 with two runs. Soler was 2-for-4 with an RBI, run scored, and a stolen base. Hyde, Garcia, and Thomas recorded a stolen base each.
The Bloodhounds travel to Delaware Valley University on Wednesday, April 6, for a non-conference match at 4:00 pm.
