Harkins' Career-High 29 Points Leads Men's Basketball Past Medgar Evers 88-73

The men's basketball team stormed past Medgar Evers College, 88-73, on Wednesday night at the Cougar Cave in Brooklyn, NY. The Bloodhounds have now won back-to-back conference games and are 3-10 overall and 2-5 in CUNYAC. The Cougars drop to 3-9 and 2-5 in the conference. 

Freshman Wyatt Harkins led John Jay with a career-high and game-high 29 points, shooting 6-for-10 from behind the arc, and a team-high three steals. Sophomore Essien Epps recorded 20 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Senior Kiernan Hayes registered his third double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 14 boards. Junior MiKing Richardson tallied 11 points, a season-high and team-high eight assists, five rebounds, and two steals. 

With the score tied at six apiece, Medgar Evers scored five straight points but sophomore Jerome Petty hit two straight three pointers and senior Geno Ware nailed a three to give John Jay a 13-11 advantage with 14:06 left in the first half. Four minutes later, the Cougars recaptured the lead but a three pointer by Harkins put the Bloodhounds up 25-24 with 6:17 on the clock. Leading by two, John Jay ended the half recorded the final four points to head into halftime with a 34-28 advantage. 

Two minutes into the second half, the Cougars cut the deficit to three but layups by Hayes, Epps, and Harkins increased the lead back up to seven. After Harkins drained another three pointer putting the Bloodhounds up by nine, the hosts went on a 5-0 run to trim the score down to 47-43 with 14:27 left in the contest. Once again, Harkins responded with a three pointer and a layup by Epps and successful free throws by Hayes increased the lead to 55-43. 

With 11:18 left to go, Medgar Evers went on a 9-2 run to trail 57-53. The Bloodhounds responded with a layup by Ware and another three by Harkins. The next seven minutes went back-and-forth as John Jay held on to a 73-69 advantage with 2:32 remaining. The Bloodhounds solidified the victory after Harkins drilled a three and Richardson made a layup to put John Jay up by nine with 1:58 left. The Bloodhounds ended the game going 8-for-8 from the free throw line to win three of their last four games.  

John Jay went 24-for-56 (42.9%) from the floor, 9-for-22 (40.9%) from behind the arc, and 31-for-44 (70.5%) from the free throw line.

The Bloodhounds will continue their road trip with a conference game on Friday, January 13, against York College at 8:00 pm.
