Ruiz's Season-High 20 Points Not Enough as Women's Basketball Falls to Cougars

The women's basketball team lost to Medgar Evers, 60-51, on Wednesday evening at the Cougar Cave in Brooklyn, NY. The Bloodhounds drop to 0-14 overall and 0-7 in CUNYAC. The Cougars improve to 1-13 and 1-6 in the conference.

Senior Shaliyah Ruiz registered a season-high and game-high 20 points, eight rebounds, and a season-high and game-high seven steals. Junior Dana Nicholson recorded 14 points after hitting four three pointers. Seniors Claire Prince and Cassandra Taylor combined for seven points, 13 rebounds, and six assists. Freshman Uju Nwaiwge came off the bench to grab seven boards.

With the score tied 4-4, Medgar Evers went on an 8-0 run but Ruiz converted on a three point play to cut the deficit to five. With the Cougars up by seven, Nicholson drained a three and the hosts followed with a jumper to give them a 18-12 lead after one quarter. Two successful free throws by freshman Karen Rosario and a layup by Prince trimmed the lead down to 18-16. The Cougars responded on a 15-2 run to go up 33-18. The Bloodhounds ended the half on a 6-1 run to trail 34-24.

After Medgar Evers hit a jumper to open the third, Nicholson nailed a three and Ruiz scored three straight points. Trailing by 10 with 5:05 left in the period, John Jay ended on a 9-2 run to head into the final quarter down 42-39. The first four minutes of the fourth went back-and-forth as the home team led 48-43. A three pointer by Ruiz with 1:49 left to play put the Bloodhounds down by four. Successful free throws by the Cougars would secure their first win of the season.

John Jay finished 15-for-61 (24.6%) from the floor, 6-for-19 (31.6%) from behind the arc, and 15-for-23 (65.2%) from the charity stripe.

The Bloodhounds will continue their road trip with a CUNYAC game on Friday, January 13, at York College at 6:00 pm.
