Taylor's Double-Double Leads Women's Basketball to First Win

The women's basketball team collected their first win of the season on Friday evening, 56-54, against York College in Jamaica, NY. The Bloodhounds improve to 1-14 overall and 1-7 in CUNYAC. The Cardinals drop to 1-15 and 1-7 in the conference. 

Senior Cassandra Taylor recorded her first double-double of the season with 14 points, a game-high 10 rebounds, a team-high five assists, and a team-high three steals. Junior Dana Nicholson finished with a team-high 16 points and two steals. Sophomore Karen Rosario registered 10 points and seven rebounds. Senior Shaliyah Ruiz added nine points, five boards, three assists, and two steals. Senior Claire Prince and freshman Uju Nwaigwe combined for 13 rebounds. 

With John Jay trailing 4-3 in the first, the Bloodhounds scored 10 straight points to take a 13-4 advantage. Two successful free throws by Taylor gave John Jay an 18-9 lead after one quarter. The Cardinals started the second on an 8-1 run to cut their deficit to 19-17. Down by four, York recorded six straight points to regain the lead. Nicholson responded by hitting back-to-back three pointers to end the half and give John Jay a 32-38 advantage heading into the half. 

Four minutes into the third, John Jay was up 38-31. The hosts followed on a 5-0 run but Nwaigwe made a layup to increase the lead back up to four. The Cardinals ended the period registering the final four points to tie the game at 40 apiece. Rosario opened the fourth with two straight baskets. York responded with 10 straight points to hold a 50-44 advantage with 5:49 left to play. Taylor then scored John Jay's next seven of eight points as part of an 8-0 run.

York eventually tied the score 52-52 with 2:44 on the clock. Nwaigwe followed with a layup and a free throw by Nicholson put John Jay up by three. York made a jumper to cut the deficit to one but the Bloodhounds played stellar defense in the final minute to hold on for their first victory of the season. 

John Jay finished 19-for-57 (33.3%) from the field, 6-for-20 (30.0%) from behind the arc, and 12-for-22 (54.5%) from the charity stripe. 

The Bloodhounds host Valley Forge on Monday, January 16, for a non-conference game at 6:00 pm at the Doghouse.
