The men's basketball team held on for a 82-73 win over Mitchell College on Monday night in New London, CT. The Bloodhounds improve to 7-13 overall. The Mariners drop to 3-16.
Sophomore
Essien Epps registered his fourth double-double of the season with a game-high 30 points, a game-high 13 rebounds, and two steals. Freshman
Wyatt Harkins recorded 22 points, shooting 4-for-5 from behind the arc. Senior
Kiernan Hayes picked up 13 points and eight boards. Junior
MiKing Richardson dished out a team-high six assists and freshman
Tyrone Dennis added eight points.
Mitchell opened up on a 6-0 run but four straight points by Epps cut the deficit to 10-8 with 14:32 left in the first half. Down by four, Hayes and Harkins made back-to-back layups to tie the game. With the score 12-12, the Bloodhounds went on a 7-0 run. The Mariners cut the lead down to two with 8:07 left in the period. At the end of the half, John Jay held a 39-34 advantage.
The hosts scored the first two points of the second but Harkins made a layup and drained a three to increase the lead to 44-36. The Mariners followed on a 9-0 run to give them their first lead of the half, 45-44. The Bloodhounds regained the lead, 52-51, and then went on a 5-0 run. With 0:58 remaining in the game, the Mariners trailed 76-73. John Jay ended the game scoring the final six points to hold on for a 79-73 non-conference win.
The Bloodhounds finished up the month of January with an overall record of 7-4, their best record in a month since January 2004.
John Jay finished 26-for-60 (43.3%) from the field, 7-for-15 (46.7%) from behind the arc, and 23-for-31 (74.2%) from the free throw line.
