Rosario Registers Double-Double in Loss to CCNY

The women's basketball team fell to the City College, 68-47 on Wednesday evening at the Nat Holman Gymnasium. The Bloodhounds drop to 0-12 overall and 0-5 in CUNYAC. The Beavers improve to 4-8 and 1-4 in the conference. 

Sophomore Karen Rosario recorded her first double-double of the season with a team-high 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Senior Cassandra Taylor and junior Dana Nicholson registered 10 points, four rebounds, and two assists each. Freshman Uju Nwaigwe fell two points shy of a double-double with eight points and 10 boards. Senior Claire Prince dished out a game-high four steals and swiped a team-high three steals. 

With the Bloodhounds trailing by one in the first quarter, John Jay scored six straight points to go up 7-2. CCNY cut the deficit to 9-7 but the Bloodhounds responded on a 5-0 to increase their lead to seven. The Beavers scored the next 10 points and held a 22-20 advantage after the first period. The hosts increased their lead to five with 6:53 remaining in the second. Down by six, senior Shaliyah Ruiz made a free-throw and Nwaigwe made back-to-back layups to trail by one. CCNY held a 34-30 advantage heading into halftime. 

The Beavers began the third on an 8-0 run but John Jay fought back to score 10 unanswered points to be down by two. CCNY ended the quarter scoring the final four points to lead 46-40. Four minutes into the fourth, CCNY broke open the game to lead by 18 after starting on a 12-0 run. The Bloodhounds were outscored 22-7 in the last period. 

John Jay finished 17-for-50 (34.0%) from the floor, 5-for-14 (35.7%) from behind the arc, and 8-for-12 (75.0%) from the free throw line. 

The Bloodhounds host Baruch College on Monday, January 9, in a conference tilt at 6:00 pm at the Doghouse. The game will be live streamed at www.johnjayathletics.com/watch
