The women's basketball team lost to Baruch College, 71-55, on Monday evening at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds drop to 0-13 on the season and 0-6 in CUNYAC. The Bearcats improve to 6-7 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
Senior
Cassandra Taylor led John Jay with a team-high 15 points, eight rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal. Junior
Dana Nicholson recorded 12 points, five boards, and two assists. Freshman
Uju Nwaigwe came off the bench to add 10 points, six rebounds, and a team-high two steals. Sophomore
Karen Rosario registered eight points and eight rebounds and senior
Shaliyah Ruiz dished out a team-high four assists.
Nicholson got the Bloodhounds on the board with a three-pointer and Rosario followed with a jumper as the game was tied 5-5. Baruch went on a 6-0 run but John Jay responded with five straight points to trail 16-15 after the first quarter. Two free throws by Taylor gave the Bloodhounds a one-point lead. With 6:20 left in the half and John Jay up by one, the Bearcats scored seven unanswered points to lead 25-19. Baruch ended the half on a 5-0 run to head into halftime with a 34-25 advantage.
Baruch quickly increased their lead to 11 but later on in the quarter, the Bloodhounds fought back on 7-0 run via back-to-back three-pointers by Taylor and Nicholson. The Bearcats led 49-44 heading into the final quarter. The visitors scored the first seven points in the period and outscored the Bloodhounds 22-11.
John Jay finished 20-for-56 (35.7%) from the field, 6-for-19 (31.6%) from behind the arc, and 9-for-13 (69.2%) from the charity stripe.
The Bloodhounds travel to Medgar Evers College on Wednesday, January 11, for a conference game at 6:00 pm.
