The women's volleyball team split a non-conference tri-meet in Camden, NJ on Saturday afternoon. The Bloodhounds defeated Brooklyn College, 3-1 (25-23, 25-15, 18-25, 25-15), and then lost to Rutgers-Camden, 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 27-25). John Jay is now 8-10 on the season.
After losing to Brooklyn earlier in the year, the Bloodhounds seeked revenge. The first set went back-and-forth but John Jay won the last four of six points to take the opening set. The Bulldogs went up early in the second but the Bloodhounds fought back to take a 15-9 lead after recording seven straight points. John Jay ended the set on a 6-0 run to take a 2-0 advantage.
With the Bloodhounds up 12-10, Brooklyn went on an 11-1 run to break open the set and cut the deficit to 2-1. John Jay started the fourth on a 10-1 run. The Bulldogs closed the gap to 12-6 but five straight points by the Bloodhounds would seal the victory.
Senior
Brittany Steele recorded a double-double with a game-high 17 kills, 13 digs, and two service aces. Sophomore
Kimberly Rodriguez also notched a double-double with a game-high 38 assists, 10 digs, and two aces. Sophomore
Mirialis Almanzar added eight kills and four total blocks. Juniors
Mballou Berete and
Nyla Lloyd-Clarke each had six kills. Freshman
Brianna Geraldo finished with eight kills and a game-high 15 digs. Junior
Hualeska Garcia registered nine digs.
Against Rutgers-Camden, John Jay jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the first. The Scarlet Raiders fought back to tie the score and followed on a 6-0 run to lead 17-12. The Bloodhounds responded on a 9-1 run to go up 21-18. Leading 24-19, Rutgers-Newark picked up four straight points but a kill by Geraldo gave John Jay the first set. The second went back-and-forth as both teams exchanged runs. John Jay held a 23-21 advantage, but the hosts registered the final four points of the set to even the score at one apiece.
John Jay began the third on a 5-1 run. With the Bloodhounds up 20-17, the Scarlet Raiders tied the score. John Jay won the next two points but Rutgers-Newark tallied five straight points to lead 2-1. Once again, the Bloodhounds took an early lead in the fourth. Holding a 11-10 advantage, John Jay picked up five straight points. The Scarlet Raiders responded on a 6-2 run. With the Bloodhounds leading 24-21, Rutgers-Newark put together a 6-1 run to complete the victory.
Steele notched her second double-double of the day and her eighth of the season. The outside hitter registered a game-high 18 kills and 14 digs. Rodriguez also recorded her second-double of the day and third of the year. The setter picked up a game-high 33 assists and 12 digs. Geraldo finished with eight kills and 14 digs. Freshman
Nicole Aguasvivas added 10 digs and Lloyd-Clarke had seven kills.
John Jay totaled 90 kills, 78 assists, 25 total blocks, 11 service aces, and 129 digs.
