Women's Volleyball Falls to Hunter in CUNYAC Championship; Bloodhounds Sweep Brooklyn for First Finals Appearance in Program History

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The #3 women's volleyball team lost to top seeded Hunter College, 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-16), in the CUNYAC Championship on Friday night on the campus of Hunter College. Before that, the Bloodhounds shutout #2 Brooklyn College, 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 28-26), to advance to the finals for the first time in program history.

In the sweep of the Bulldogs, Brittany Steele had one of her best matches of the season. The junior notched a double-double with a game-high 16 kills and game-high 17 digs. Freshman Brianna Geraldo also recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore Kimberly Rodriguez dished out a match-high 40 assists and juniors Nyla Lloyd-Clarke and Mballou Berete each had six kills. Junior Hualeska Garcia and freshman Nicole Aguasvivas finished with nine and 11 digs, respectively. Sophomore Mirialis Almanzar added four total blocks. 

The opening set went back-and-forth as the score was tied 6-6. John Jay then scored three straight but the Bulldogs responded with an 8-1 run. Trailing 15-11, the Bloodhounds broke open the period with nine straight points. Brooklyn cut the lead down to 21-20, but John Jay took four of the final six points to go up 1-0. Just like the first set, the middle went back-and-forth with the score knotted at six apiece. The Bulldogs went on a 6-1 run but the Bloodhounds chipped at the deficit. John Jay dominated the end of the set and would go on to lead 2-0.

Brooklyn held an early 9-5 advantage in the third. Down by six, the Bloodhounds registered four straight to trail by two. With the score at 24-21 in favor of the Bulldogs, John Jay tied the score and eventually took the set and match, 3-0. 

The Bloodhounds totaled 47 kills, 46 assists, 12 total blocks, and 61 digs. 

In the loss to the Hawks, Steele registered a match-high 11 kills and four digs. Geraldo tallied nine kills and eight digs. Rodriguez contributed 24 assists and three digs. Aguasvivas had seven digs and Berete added four kills. 

Hunter scored nine of the first 11 points in the first set. John Jay cut the lead down to 14-7 but the Hawks went on a 6-1 run to end the opening period. Early on in the second, the points went back-and-forth as John Jay trailed 4-3. Hunter increased its lead to 10-4 but five straight by the Bloodhounds cut the lead back down to one. The Hawks responded on back-to-back 4-0 runs to take the second set. 

In the third, Hunter held an 8-2 advantage. John Jay continued to chip at the lead and trailed 11-7. The Hawks broke open the set on a 5-1 run and would go on to win their fourth straight CUNYAC Championship. 

John Jay totaled 25 kills, 25 assists, six total blocks, and 32 digs. 

The Bloodhounds will await word on the ECAC Postseason Tournament.
