The #5 men's basketball team was eliminated from the CUNYAC postseason after losing to #4 Baruch College, 67-58, on Sunday afternoon at the ARC Arena. The Bloodhounds finish the season with an overall record of 11-16.
Doug Levy finished with a career-day with his fifth double-double of the season. The freshman scored a game-high 20 points, game-high 19 rebounds, and a team-high three blocks. Junior
MiKing Richardson recorded 17 points and dished out a team-high four assists. Freshman
Wyatt Harkins added 11 points and sophomore
Essien Epps had seven points and three assists. Senior
Geno Ware swiped a team-high two steals.
Baruch opened the game on a 14-2 run but Richardson hit a three and Ware made two free throws to cut the deficit to 14-7. Down by nine, the Bloodhounds used a 10-0 run to give them their first lead of the contest, 19-18, on a jumper by Harkins with 10:36 left in the first half. The Bearcats responded with a layup but a layup by Levy put John Jay back up by one. Trailing by one with 0:11 remaining in the half, Levy made two free throws. Eight seconds later, Baruch hit two free throws to go into halftime with a 35-34 advantage.
The Bearcats scored the first two points in the second but three straight layups by Epps, Levy, and Richardson put the Bloodhounds up by two. John Jay's largest lead came with 11:20 when the Bloodhounds were up by four. The Bearcats followed on a 6-1 run to lead 54-53 with 6:47 left to go. A jumper by Richardson gave John Jay a one point lead but Baruch went on a 5-0 run. A free throw by Levy cut the deficit to three with 2:18 remaining but the Bearcats scored six straight points to seal the victory.
The Bearcats will now face #1 College of Staten Island on Wednesday in the CUNYAC semifinals.
John Jay finished 20-for-59 (33.9%) from the floor, 6-for-20 (30.0%) from behind the arc, and 12-for-22 (54.5%) from the free throw line.
This game turned out to be the final one of Kiernan Hayes and
Geno Ware's collegiate career. The Athletics Department wishes them the best of luck in the future!
