The baseball team opened up the 2017 season with a doubleheader split at Lancaster Bible College in Lancaster, PA. The Bloodhounds took the first game, 9-5, before dropping the second, 9-2 (in five innings due to darkness). John Jay won its first game for the first time since the 2012 season.
In game one, junior
Brian Garcia opened the scoring with a home run to right field to give John Jay an early 1-0 lead. In the top of the third, junior
Zach Hyde singled, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by senior
Dylan Laudano. Senior
Charlee Rodriguez then doubled in freshman
Danny Wynne to give the Bloodhounds a 4-0 lead. John Jay broke open the game in the fifth when Laudano homered and Garcia hit his second homer of the contest.
Junior
Christian Rodriguez got the opening day nod and picked up the win after logging four innings, allowing two hits, two runs, and struck out three. In his first collegiate appearance, freshman
Sean Napier pitched the final 2.2 innings and did not allow a run.
Charlee Rodriguez, Hyde, and Garcia finished the game with two hits each.
In game two, the Chargers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but an RBI single by
Charlee Rodriguez cut the deficit to one. Lancaster Bible responded with four runs in the second inning to go up 6-2. Sophomore
Brandon Thomas registered an RBI fielder's choice but John Jay would fall by a final score of 9-2.
Laudano went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Rodriguez and Thomas recorded a stolen base each. Freshman Jared Herschfield came in for his first collegiate appearance and threw a scoreless inning.
The Bloodhounds will face NYU on Wednesday, March 1, for a non-conference doubleheader at 12:00 pm and 3:00 pm. John Jay will then travel south to Myrtle Beach, SC for its annual spring training trip from Thursday, March 2 to Saturday, March 4.
